Do the acupuncture needles hurt?
Over the centuries, refined needle insertion techniques have been developed which enable your OMD to place a needle with very little or no sensation. Our clinic uses only pre-sterilized, FDA-approved, disposable needles of the finest possible quality. These Japanese needles are very thin, about the size of a human hair, and rarely draw blood or fluids. Insertion of these slender, sterilized needles goes unnoticed by most, and feels like a small tap followed by a sensation of tingling, numbness, or traveling warmth; this feeling is from Qi moving through the body. Prior to their first treatment, many patients do not realize that acupuncture is painless. Most patients comment that this feeling is pleasant and relaxing. Needles normally remain in place for twenty minutes to one hour.
In some cases, it is not necessary to use needles at all. For example, when treating young children, infants or sensitive adults, other techniques that are equally effective can be used. If you have a real fear of needles, discuss it with your doctor -- an appropriate treatment strategy can always be agreed upon.
